A field guide to slow mornings

A ceramic coffee mug on a rustic table in the garden at dawn
Step one: go outside.

My mornings have a strict protocol now: coffee, garden, no phone until the cup is empty. It took three weeks to stop reaching for it like a reflex.

What fills the space is embarrassingly simple. Steam off the mug. The particular way light comes through the greenhouse panels at 7:40. A hummingbird doing inventory.

I used to think slow mornings were a luxury for people without jobs. Now I think they’re maintenance. You can’t pour from an empty watering can, etc.

The whole routine takes twenty minutes. Nobody’s life changed. But mine started feeling like mine again, which seems like a lot to get from a cup of coffee and a chair.
