A garden takes its time

The rosemary has finally settled in. For weeks it looked like nothing was happening, and I wondered if I had planted it in the wrong corner of the bed. Then one morning there was new growth, pale and soft at the tips.

I am learning that tending a garden means being available for a pace I cannot set. Water, check the soil, make one small adjustment. Come back tomorrow and do it again.

The tomatoes are the opposite lesson. They want everything now — sun, water, room — and they will sulk loudly if they do not get it. Same garden, two temperaments.

There is something useful in having a project that will not hurry for you. I am trying to take that lesson back inside.
